Ancient Roman Glass and Leather Necklace With Sterling Silver and African Glass Beads

Featured in this handmade necklace is a pendant that I handcrafted from a beautiful piece of Ancient Roman Glass and Sterling Silver. This green-aqua glass is translucent with iridescent calcification on the front. It's a thick disc with hills and valleys, and lovely texture. The back of the glass is smoother, with only a little bit of light calcification (see picture.)

The Roman glass was found along the Silk Road in Afghanistan, and is estimated to be over 900 years old! In another life, it was part of a bowl, vase, or vessel that had been buried in the sand for centuries. Large and whole pieces were sent to museums around the world, while smaller pieces have been cut and drilled for jewelry making.

I mounted the glass on a handmade Sterling Silver headpin that I twisted into an artistic knot at the end. To add a slightly rustic look, I didn't highly polish the silver, and deliberately kept some of the darkness that was left behind by my torch.

The other two beads are Recycled African Glass. These are made by African tribes by pushing finely ground recycled glass into mud molds, and firing at high heat in kilns. Every bead is beautiful and unique, with no two being exactly the same size or the same color! I love them! I'm proud to say that these are Fair Trade beads.

The African beads are framed by unique Sterling Silver spacers. They're so unique, that I'm the only person I know who has any, and I don't know where to get more! ;-)

The ends of the leather cord are tightly wrapped with 24ga Sterling Silver Wire, with a touch of jeweler's glue hidden beneath for extra security. The cord is finished with my own hammered Sterling silver clasp,

This is a piece that is suitable for men and women, and will bring out the exotic hippie Boho spirit that lives within so many of us.

* Necklace is 20" (50cm) long from end of the cord, to the end of the clasp
* Ancient Roman Glass measures approx 18mm (.7") Diameter. The thickness varies from 5.5mm - 9mm
* African Recycled Glass = approx 8mm (no two are alike)
* Pendant hangs 1.25" from the cord
* Leather is about 2mm x 2mm (3/32")

All metal is Sterling Silver, and the leather is very strong, with very little stretch. As with most leather, it might stretch a bit when worn constantly, but I have a bracelet made with this same leather, and I wear it 24 hours/day, including in the shower, etc., and it's held up very well, with no stretch or color change as of yet.
