Ancient Roman Glass, Cobalt Blue African Glass Earrings

These handmade earrings are outrageously cool! I've combined different shapes and colors of Ancient Roman Glass with rustic recycled African glass beads, and connected it all together with dark Sterling Silver to create this unique pair of earrings.

At the top are tiny blue or green rondelles, cut from pieces of ancient glass. I'm not sure what the tiniest beads are, they're used as the spacers on whole strands of Roman glass beads. Some sellers say they're also glass, and some say it's jade or another stone. I don't know what they are, but they're teeny, earthy, and perfect in these earrings!

The glass shards are both a pretty shade of greenish aqua, and have some calcification from the hundreds of years the glass was buried. I don't know the history of these particular pieces, but based on other strands I have, I'd guess them to be at least 900 years old. They come from broken pottery and dishware that the ancient Romans used. The treasures are found during excavations, with the unbroken dishes, mugs, etc., being sent to museums around the world.

The cobalt blue African glass is fascinating! Tribes crush recycled glass into powder, put it into mud molds, and then fire it in a kiln, creating organic, unique, and no-two-alike beads. Their rugged beauty are perfect with the ancient glass.

These beads called for the aged look of antiqued Sterling Silver, so I added a patina and hand-polished it to a soft, gunmetal gray.

This pair of earrings is long, rustic, and very Bohemian!

Hang approx 2.75" (7cm) from top of Sterling leverback ear wires
Tiniest beads at top: about 3mm
Glass beads at top: 2.5mm x 4.5mm
Roman Glass Shards: 11mm x 19mm and 13mm x 22mm

Finished off with a 3.5mm daisy spacer at the bottom.

All metal is sterling silver. If you have questions or concerns, drop me a line! You can reach me via the contact page, or just send an email to me at nightskyjewelry@gmail.com
